Xinjiang lakes in the UNESCO World Heritage PDF Print E-mail

xinjiang lakesChina intends to put four mountain lakes in the Uyghur autonomous region Xinjiang on the UNESCO World Heritage list, declared Yang Zhaopin,  researcher at the Ecology and Geography Institute in Xinjiang.

 The total area of the lakes is of 4 600 sq. km. “This lake region, situated at over 1 000 m altitude, presents a variety of landscapes in an arid area, with glaciers, snowy peaks, rivers and lakes, forests, pastures and si wetlands, in a nomad way of life”, the expert stated.

Xinjang, which will thus appear for the first time on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is rich in natural resources. “I hope that, by means of our efforts, this area become more known in the world, and irs economic and social development thus be stimulated”, said the above mentioned specialist. On the UNESCO World Heritage list, are presently 38 interest marks in China. The lakes’ application will be submitted to UNESCO in 2011 or 2012.
